The Valley of Paradise (in Berber: Aït Benhaddou n’Warghen) is undoubtedly the most beautiful natural excursion from Agadir. Nestled between the foothills of the High Atlas, this green oasis with its pools of turquoise water, date palms and free-roaming Barbary monkeys is often referred to as the “hidden gem” of Morocco. Here’s everything you need to know to take full advantage of it.
Where is Paradise Valley?
The Paradise Valley is located approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Agadir, in the commune of Aït Benhaddou (not to be confused with the ksar of the same name, near Ouarzazate). It is part of the Western High Atlas region, and is accessed by the N8 road which goes up from Agadir towards Immouzzer des Ida-Outanane. Travel: approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes’ drive (depending on the hotel pickup).
What to see and do in the Paradise Valley?
1. Natural swimming pools
This is the main attraction. Along the wadi (wadi) which crosses the valley, dozens of natural basins dug into the rock form dream pools. The water is fresh and crystal clear, coming directly from the sources of the High Atlas. In the middle of summer (35°C in Agadir), diving into these pools in the shade of the palm trees is an experience of absolute well-being. Available from May to October depending on the flow of the wadi.
2. Barbary apes
Dozens of Barbary monkeys (Macaca sylvanus) live in semi-freedom in the valley. They approach visitors without fear, especially if you have nuts or fruit. A show that children love and that even adults don’t expect to see in the middle of Morocco. Tip: don’t feed them anything — they have their natural diet.
3. The panoramic route to Imouzzer
The road that goes up to the Paradise Valley crosses the Anti-Atlas argan grove — the only argan forest in the world, classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. You might see goats climbing into the argan trees to eat the fruit (yes, the famous goats in the trees of Morocco!). The panoramas of the Atlantic coast and the bay of Agadir are splendid.
4. Berber picnic and mint tea
Our excursions include a stop at a café-restaurant in the valley run by a local Berber family. Mint tea with pancakes (msemen) or tagine in an exceptional natural setting. This is often the moment that visitors mention first in their reviews: the authenticity of the meal, the kindness of the hosts, the peace of the place.
5. Hiking in the valley
For the more sporty, a 2-3 hour hike in the valley allows you to go up to the springs, cross traditional Berber villages and access panoramic viewpoints over the entire region. Level: easy to moderate (rocky terrain, good footwear recommended).
